It is recommended to use the minimum amount of solvent which can dissolve the solid being recrystallized ,If excess of solvent is used, it can prolong the process of recrystallization and also loss in the mass of crystals may take place as they will remain in the solvent. It is always advisable to use a saturated solution with the solvent or super saturated solution. This helps in getting crystals out of super saturated solution on cooling. However if the solution is not saturated or solvent is in excess, it is difficult to take out the expected amount crystalline solid during recrystallization or cooling process
